UK stabilization/solidification treatment and
remediation – Part II: performance, QA/QC and
guidance documents
A. Al-Tabbaa and A.S.R. Perera

Abstract
This paper is Part II of a two-part publication presenting an overview of the state of practice in UK stabilization/solidification treatment and remediation. These two papers form a summary, including some recent updates, of the seven state-of-practice reports produced by the EPSRC-funded net
net
work STARNET. This second paper covers performance, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC)
and guidance documents. Performance includes binder–contaminant interactions, management scenarios and related acceptance criteria and environmental impacts. It also includes a list of typical
site trials and commercial projects completed in the UK. The role and details of QA/QC before, dur
ing and after stabilization/solidification (S/S) treatment are then addressed. The section on guidance
documents includes details of two recent publications by the Environment Agency and the British Cement Association. The first paper covers binders, technologies, testing and research. Collectively, the two documents give an overview of the research and applications activities in the UK on S/S in the past decade or so.

Key words: guidance documents, performance criteria, QA/QC, stabilization/solidification
