S/S experience in France M.C. Magnié Abstract Stabilization/solidification technology has been widely used in France since 1995 in the field of solid or sludge hazardous waste (HW) pretreatment before acceptance in HW landfills, with more than 600 000 tonnes of HW treated each year. The technique is also used for site remediation, on the basis of a case-by-case approach, according to French regulations. Remediation objectives are defined for each site, according to impact assessment studies and as agreed between site owners and local authorities. On-site remediation is also facing economic and technical challenges from offsite treatments (for example, disposal in landfills), and there is a need to demonstrate the long-term efficacy of the treatment when the treated material is left on site. In addition, a new range of promising applications of S/S technology is linked to the reuse of stabilized industrial wastes for highway foundations or mine backfilling, but a regulatory context is still lacking.
